DISCIPLINE
○ Young children are active. They do not always listen well. They are learning to get along in a group. They are figuring out how to channel their energies, control their behavior, take care of themselves, and use their language to get what they need. They are dependent on caring adults to establish a safe and supportive atmosphere for them where they can learn more about relating with others.
○ Young children are developing a sense of what is right and wrong. Sometimes their actions are inappropriate and they need guidance. When school begins, we will talk about rules in the classroom, so the children will know what is expected of them.
○ If a child breaks one of the classroom rules, we will talk to them and remind them
why
they should or should not do something. Talking to the children and redirecting them usually helps the situation.
○ If there is a conflict between two or more children we will first be watchful and see if they can work out the solution themselves. If a child is hurting another child, the teacher will intervene and help the children to work things out by talking over the situation together. Children may be asked to sit in a chair for a short time (no more than five minutes) to calm down and think about the situation.
○ The teachers will model appropriate behavior, teach forgiveness, and help the children express their feelings in positive ways.
○ In cases of extreme discipline problems, where the child is hurting himself, others, or property, the child’s parents will be consulted to determine a solution to the problem.
○ This is a list of “classroom rules” which will be posted and talked about in each classroom. You may also want to talk about these rules at home.
